What To Eat During Recovery for Wisdom Teeth Removal

After dreading this day for LITERALLY years, I caved and got my wisdom teeth removed last Friday. I put it off for as long as I could, hoping they would never cause me problems, but ALAS (picture all the angst in throwing oneself onto one’s bed and dramatically sobbing), my other teeth began to cause me pain because of the pressure of my two darn bottom wisdom teeth.

My dentist was incredibly professional and caring and the whole thing was not even 10% as bad as I expected. The surgery went well – I was sedated and hardly remember a thing (not even the episode of Downton Abbey my husband and I watched when we got home – of course, I had to re-watch it later!) and my recovery has been relatively easy.

I know that wisdom teeth removal and other oral surgeries are super common, so I wanted to share some of my tips and ideas for eating during recovery. It can be challenging, but I have some great recipes below that you can try out for you or your loved ones you’re caring for to help give you fuel during recovery, even when you can’t hardly open your jaw or chew!

Breakfast and Snacks for Recovery from Wisdom Teeth Removal

You will probably not eat a full meal during the early days of your recovery. I snacked a lot! Here are some suggestions for breakfast and through-the-day snacking!

Energizing Banana Blueberry Smoothie: When you need something fruity! Be sure to drink sans straw – using a straw can hurt your still-recovering gums!

Fluffy and Soft Whole Wheat Pancakes: I was majorly craving these babies this weekend – like I might have (definitely) made them twice! Because of all the medication I was taking, I knew I needed to keep my stomach full of the types of foods that are kind to one’s stomach, like bread! (I learned this the hard way the first afternoon after my surgery. Threw up my medicine four times because my stomach had so little in it and it was NOT happy – learn from my lesson, EAT as soon as you can when you’re done!)

These pancakes were pretty easy to eat! I pulled off small pieces and because the pancakes are so soft, it was very easy to chew and enjoy! These might be a bit of a stretch to eat depending on your recovery, so be sure to wait until you feel healed enough to give them a go!


Homemade Applesauce: Soft, cold, super easy to eat, and a rather healthy option during recovery!

I’d also recommend yogurt (This was excellent! Full of protein!), oatmeal (Haven’t tried this yet, but will probably for breakfast tomorrow!), cottage cheese and mashed bananas (The easiest breakfast!). Those are all excellent options with little to no prep work!

You could also tried juiced vegetables or vegetables softened by boiling or roasting as a healthy option, like mashed potatoes! Soup was a great little meal for me as well – so easy to eat and full of great veggies. Scrambled eggs will give you some protein and macaroni and cheese was one of my favorite foods to eat this weekend!

Sweets for Recovery from Wisdom Teeth Removal

You still need your sweets! This is the right time to indulge, trust me!

Ice Cream: This is one treat that I thought felt just amazing on my sore mouth! It is cold and creamy so it was super easy to eat in small bites (no chewing!) and it’s kinda like icing the inside of your mouth! So, so soothing. I tried to maintain a somewhat healthy diet while recovering, but nothing felt so good as ice cream, so I definitely averaged two servings a day this weekend!

Blueberry Frozen Yogurt: This one is so easy, there’s no need to prep ahead of time! Just throw your frozen blueberries and your yogurt in the blender and you’ll be enjoying your froyo in minutes. Smooth and a healthy treat!

You could also try pudding or jell-o, both easy to eat and tasty.
